Campo Maior is a Portuguese town belonging to the district of Portalegre, Alentejo.
This town, 16 kilometres to the northeast of Elvas, is a coffee production centre dominated by an imposing medieval castle that suffered a long and intense military history due to its location in the border between Spain and Portugal.
In the heart of the city you can see the Igreja de São João Baptista church (1747), with an annex chapel housing the Religious Art Museum, the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Espectação (17th and 18th centuries), which has the unsettling Capela dos Ossos (Bone Chapel) annex. The chapel is totally panelled by the bones of those who died in the explosion of a local gunpowder storage.
Rua Canada street is an excellent place to see the civil architecture since it boasts excellent examples from the 17th and 19th centuries.
Other interesting spots in the city are the Praça da República, with its 1740 pillory, and the Paços do Concelho.
A good moment to visit Campo Maior is in September, when the town holds the Festa das Flores (Flower Festival).
8 kilometres away from Campo Maior, in Ouguela, there is an interesting Coffee Museum, with technical, bibliography, farming, and production sections.
