Located just 16 kilometres northeast of Faro, Loulé is a municipality and city in Algarve. The city is considered one of Portugal’s most attractive commercial hubs, so it is a very good base to explore the inner areas.
Loulé’s old city is especially attractive, as well as the ruins of its Moorish Castle, currently house to the Municipal Museum.
In front of the castle, it is worth visiting the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, dating back to the XVII century.
The city has a small university, fueling it with some energy. The same happens during Carnival and Festival Med, a lively yearly music festival in late July.
Within the municipality it is worth seeing the touristic location of Vilamoura with its spectacular marina and Archaeological Museum; the town of Quarteira, the Museum and Roman Villa of Cerro da Vila; the town of Alte, with the flawless Queda do Vigário cascade, and Almancil. This area also boasts excellent beaches equipped with everything you need for an unforgettable stay.
During July, the town hosts the International Jazz festival, where worldwide musicians perform in jam sessions in the convent and castle.
Eventually, the Nossa Senhora da Piedade celebrations, linked to ancient maternity rituals, take place in the city. This is the most important procession in Algarve. On Resurrection Sunday, the statue of the Virgin is moved from the chapel to the Parish church on top of its hill, and two weeks later returned to its original location in another spectacular procession.
