Porto Santo, a "golden island" bathed by turquoise water, is a quiet city inhabited by hospitable people. Although 40 km afar from Madeira, this island is the opposite of its elder sister.
The sun, the sea, and the sand are its most appealing qualities, since it has a wild beach, with clean crystalline waters, with a stretch of nearly 9 km long. Its waters have extraordinary therapeutic properties.
In addition to the beach, the city of Vila Baleira has intriguing stories and legends. Some of them can be discovered in the Christopher Columbus House Museum, in the house where the Genoese sailor lived.
In the back of the city, stands the Pico do Castelo Peak (435m). Its top has volcanic origins, and features a XVI c. fortress from where you can see the highest mountain of the island, the Pico do Facho Peak (517m)
This little island is the ideal place to hide from the stress. Porto Santo is surrounded by natural landscapes, changing between quiet beaches, a few green places and a turquoise sea.
Porto Santo’s landscape is also known for its pretty traditional windmills. They doubtlessly offer a picturesque panoramic.
To reach this paradise, you can take a plane from Madeira, which can seem a little pricy, but will take you there in 15 minutes. Also, you can go by cruise, which last around 2 hours and a half.
During summer time, there are direct flights from Lisbon and Porto to Porto Santo.
