This castle stands in an strategic location, dominating the town of Campo Maior, in Portugal, near the border with Spain. There are still visible parts of the medieval walls, moat, and north tower.
The Campo Maior Castle preserves two of the six towers that once composed the defense of the city. The occidental tower is worth seeing because it the manueline moldings and the great room with two naves divided by stone pillars.
History goes that, in 1732, during a powerful thunderstorm, lightning stroke one of the eastern towers of the castle, used to storage gunpowder, triggering a huge explosion that was followed by a fire that destroyed two thirds of the city. After this unfortunate event, the castle was rebuilt.
