Dating back to Roman times, Setúbal is a quarter and city that belongs to the region of Lisbon. It has a historical harbour of great relevance.
On this quarter you might find a little bit of everything, from never ending beaches of fine sand and crystal waters, to typical fishermen boroughs, where you can directly buy fresh fish, to huge pine forests that feed the local economy and even large urban areas with great commercial areas.
Setúbal is also part of the famous Estuário do Sado Nature Reserve, Of great botanical and animal interest. It is the perfect place for bird spotting, finding beautiful birds like storks, flamingos, wild ducks and many more. It is also possible to see dolphins if you take one of the several tours offered.
Due to its closeness to the sea, in Setúbal you can find a wide variety of traditional dishes, mostly made of fresh fish. There, you will have the chance to try the traditional Choco Frito (fried cuttlefish).
In Setúbal it is worth to visit places like the Castle of São Felipe, the Praça do Bocage Square, the Igreja de Jesus Church, the Archaeology and Ethnography Museum, the Baroque Museum and the Work Museum Miche Giocametti.
You can go from the quarter of Setúbal to other interesting towns like Sesimbra, with an Arabian castle, a crystalline water beach and a beautiful fishing port; Palmela, with its Medieval castle; or Sines and Alcacer do Sal, located in the Alentejo.
