Mafra is a municipality near Sintra on the region of Lisbon.
Even though no one is sure about its origin, some archaeological remains suggest that neolithic people already inhabited this region. Nevertheless its importance only started on the XVIII century when the D. João V king ordered the construction of the actual biggest baroque building in Portugal, the Mafra Convent also known as Mafra National Palace, a magnificent building with hundreds of rooms, a famous library, a hospital and a basilica with two wide chimes, considered the biggest and best in the world with more than 92 bells.
Mafra also has important natural resources as the Tapada Nacional de Mafra where the iberian lynx is preserved.
Near Mafra you might also find Ericeira a fishing village known for its beautiful and extensive beaches, good restaurants and good spots to practice golf as well as other maritime sports.
Visit Mafra and be enchanted by the wonders of the country, city and beach. Enjoy its resources and deeply relax.
