Corvo Island is the smallest and least visited of the Azores Archipelago. It is only 17.1 square kilometres and barely has 500 inhabitants.
This little island raises over the ocean as a great solitary crater. In one of its hillsides is located a charming village with old stone dwellings and other more modern ones in white.
In the island is located the volcanic Caldeirão, with barren hillsides, divided by small walls and meadows where the cattle grazes. This isolated and quiet island is a unique place to meditate.
Its capital is Vila do Corvo, from where you will have magnificent views on a relaxed and lonely environment. It is essential to go all over its crater and go down to the lakes formed on its interior.
To reach this part of the island, there are daily small boats that cross the channel located between the Flores and Corvo Islands. The trips take almost one hour and a half.
Incredibly, despite being an isolated island, Corvo has been the first island to have free internet.
One of the best dates to visit this island is in August, since the 15th of this month the festivities of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres are celebrated. In this celebration the local bands are in charge of the music.
Corvo is internationally known as a paradise for the bird sighting, since it is the natural habitat of species such as the tern, wood pigeon or Cory’s shearwater. On it rest many migratory birds which depart from North America.
Scuba diving is quite famous in the island, as it has wonderful places to practise it.
The best places to have a bath are the Praia da Areia Beach and Casa Port.
