The Palácio de Mateus (Mateus Palace) is well known thanks to the bottles of Mateus Rosé wine (in the labels of which the Palace is drawn). The Palace is a Baroque 18th century building, regarded as one of the most lavish manor houses in Europe, attributed to the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni.
The façade of the palace is an armonious ensemble where the double stairway with balustrade stands out. Above this, the family’s coat of arms lies, flanked by two allegorical statues. As counterpoint to this elevation, all the corners in the building are decorated with pinnacles standing on the cornices.
From the interior, the quiet library can be visited, which preserves volumes from the 16th century; the “Four Seasons” room, which is decorated with 18th century furniture, valuable Bargueño desks, Chinese porcelains, and allegorical paintings symbolizing the four seasons. There is a small museum where you can see a copy of a valuable edition of Os Luísadas, masterwork of Camões. This edition was limited to 200 pieces which were offered to different important men and women in Europe at that time.
The Palace is surrounded by a fantasy garden with tiny bushes, clean statues, and a quiet cipres walkway.
