Vila do Conde is a pintoresque city located next to the mouth of Ave river, in the Porto district.
This gorgeous place features a characteristic and appealing historical centre, excellent beaches, and an interesting and “salty” past, since it was the main salt exporter during Roman times.
Currently, Vila do Conde is a renowned weekend destination for those living in Porto. Its port, important for shipbuilding during the Age of Discovery, boasts a rich historical importance.
Some other relevant attractions are: the Santa Clara Monastery, in a nearby mountain; the medieval aqueduct; Praia do Forno and Praia de Nossa Senhora de Guia, two attractive beaches that are the best in Porto and that can be easily accessible by subway.
The most lively times to visit the city are during the months of June and July, when the main festivities and fairs are held, such as the Festival Ollin Kan Portugal, in the banks of the Ave river, where musicians from all over the world gather and live up the city with free concerts; la Festa de São João, the major event in Vila do Conde, taking place the days before June 23rd and celebrated with fireworks, concerts, boat parades, and religious processions; the Curtas, an interesting short-movie festival during July, and the Feira Nacional de Artesanato fair, an important craft fair held in the last week of July and the first of August.
