The Sé or Former Cathedral of Miranda do Douro was built in the 16th century under the reign of King João III. It features a Renaissance portico and an impressive building, almost too vast when compared to the rest of the city.
The interior is divided in three naves. The greatest artistic treasures are the major reredos, by the Spanish sculptor Juan Muniátegui; and an image of Christ as a child. The legend goes that Christ, as a child, walked along the streets of Miranda with a sword in his hands, to harangue the locals into fighting with the Spanish. Both the reredos, organ, and chair sets are Baroque in style.
The major reredos represents an Image of the Assumption of the Virgin and images of the Virgin and the Four Evangelists are repeated around the central image.
The second floor crowns the church with a real-size representation of the Calvary.
