The Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa (Vale do Côa Archaeological Site) is the main attraction in the town of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Portugal.
This archaeological site hosts a famed cave-art gallery, with three sites open to the public: Canada do Inferno, Ribeira de Piscos, and Penascosa.
The site of Penascosa is the one featuring the most interesting engravings; but the Canada do Inferno is a perfect location to understand how close all these findings were to destruction due to the building of a nearby dam, now only half-built.
All the valley in which the sites are located is interesting, and can be accessed through a guided tour. The number of visitors is strictly controlled so that - during summer months (july through September), it’s advised to book tickets beforehand.
