Mafra’s National Palace, located just in the centre of Mafra , was built by the portuguese king D. João V as a promise to God in order to have a son.
This relevant baroque monument is considered the most important baroque sample in Portugal.
This beautiful palace was built in regional limestone and has more than 38.000 metres, with more than 1.200 different rooms and 4700 doors and windows.
Nevertheless, the most relevant objects from this palace are held in the basilica where you might find the two chimes with 92 bells and six organs.
We highlight its fine library from the XVIII century with 3800 volumes and the hospital.
The palace, even though it was never used as a residential palace, was used as a festivities and parties palace and a resting place for the royal family after their long hunts.
It was also the history related with the cosntruction of this palace and the local population that inspired José Saramago to write the “Baltasar and Blimunda”, one of its most well-known pieces.
