Porto de Mós is a not very visited by tourists town in the region of Leiria, located between Lena River and an imposing 18th-century castle, a perfect starting point to explore mountains and caves in the Serras d'Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park.
This town was an important Roman settlement whose inhabitants used the Lena River to transport mill wheels from a nearby quarry and afterwards, iron from a 10 kilometres to north-west mine. Nowadays this town is still a source of white and black stone, used on the calçada portuguesa, the mosaic-shaped pavements placed all over the country.
The town is located towards the south from a group of streets next to its Medieval castle and reaches until the Municipal Market, located in the Dr. Francisco Sá Carneiro Avenue. Un poco más al Oeste, en dirección al río, se encuentra la Rua Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques, la calle principal.
At 15 minutes by car to the north-east is located the Porto de Mós, where an old fragment of a Roman road can be seen. Nowadays it is an interesting hiking track signaled with red and yellow marks all along its 9 kilometres long.
