São Brás de Alportel is a quiet village that is nestled in a valley surrounded by trees, just 17 kilometers north of Faro. It is an excellent choice for a break from the beach and the busy life of the coast.
The town is small and it is different than other busy towns. It is a nice place to walk around and do different activities such as the Cork Route.
São Brás de Alportel was an important town until the nineteenth century, the golden age of cork, and it has remained true to its agricultural origins.
It is worth visiting the Ethnographic Museum of Algarve Costume and strolling through its beautiful historical center.
While strolling through the Old Center, it is advised to go along Rua Gago Coutinho south from the Long Way to the Matriz Church (16th century), from where you will enjoy excellent views over the oranges fields and valleys that surround it .
Near the church is the former Episcopal Palace, and below it, the Jardim da Verbena Garden, the swimming pool and children's park.
Particularly striking is the well- known Calçadinha of São Brás de Alportel, a road built in Roman times that probably connected the city of Ossonooba (now Faro) with Pax Julia (Beja) road. Currently, you can walk two ways on this ancient road for 100 meters or 500.
