Castro Marim is a picturesque villa and a municipality, kept in the shadow of a fourteenth century castle. It is a secluded place, neither overcrowded nor too much visited by foreign tourists, but it has its charm and is worth visiting.
Its city center is rather interesting, here you will find nice restaurants and imposing fortifications, from where you get a magnificent panoramic over the salt flats, a bridge that links the Algarve to Spain, over the Natural Castro Marim Salt Marsh Reserve and Vila Real de Santo António, famous by its flamingos and storks.
The main points of interest in this locality are: Castro Marim Castle, São Sebastião Fort (nowadays closed to the public), Santiago’s Church and the a Sapal de Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Natural Reserve.
We recommend the visit to Castro Marim throughout the joyful Medieval Fair (Feira Medieval), that lasts for five days, and takes place on the last weekend of august. On the first day, there is a procession, from the city center to the castle; on the last day another procession takes place, from the castle to the city centre, going back to the medieval era. At the fair there is music, fencing competitions, taverns of typical food and a great medieval banquet.
