The town of Manteigas is located next to the magnificent Valley of the River Zêzere, with high peaks and forest-covered slopes of the mountains. It’s the genuine "mountain village". In Moorish times, an agreement was made affecting the thermal waters of the spa at Caldas de mantegas.
The village is also home-base to the headquarters of the Natural Park of Serra da Estrela. Therefore it is an excellent area for hikers that wish to explore the region. You should have a walk through the glacial Valley, in the area above the village, and you may discover meadows with stone houses and livestock grazing.
One of the top places to see if you are passing by Manteigas is Poço do Inferno, a beautiful waterfall located in steep gorge of Ribeira de Leadres, located about 10 kilometers from town. This place acquires a special beauty in spring time.
The region of Manteigas is more rural and older than the other regions of the Sierra, which developed towards modernity of today.
Hiking: there are three recommended trails in Serra, on the borders of Manteigas. For more information, you should contact the Park Office.
Ski: you can have fun practicing this sport in SkiParque, 7.5 miles east from the village (www.skiparque.pt); and also, when weather conditions are favorable, the Park organizes paragliding, canoeing, climbing, cycling and horse riding (usually in the summertime, to compensate for the lack of snow.)
