Caldeira Grande is the most iconic natural feature of Faial Island, and one of the largest volcanic systems in the Azores archipelago, with 1450 meters of diameter and 400 meters of depth.
This volcanic cone is covered by bushes and laurel forest. In the depths of the cone, there is a second and smaller crater produced by a second eruption.
Next to the caldera, you will find an outlook from where you will get privileged views over the valley of Flemgos, Horta, and the islands of Pico and São Jorge .
The first and vast eruption of this volcano created the island, and was followed by numerous other episodes, as evidenced by the many craters that extend to the west: Cabeços dos Trinta, Verde, da Fonte, do Fogo, and do Canto.
To the south of the Caldeira Grande, stands Cabeço Gordo, the highest point in the island, with 1043 metres. The hillsides are not particularly accessible, and it is not encouraged to descend them on rainy days.
Something easier is the trail that surrounds the caldera of the older volcano, that has almost 7 kilometres in perimeter and is surrounded by fields of hydrangeas.
The roads ER 1-2ª and ER 2-2ª surround the volcano on the base and allow you to access Cabouco and Talhão forest parks, which feature picnic areas and resting spaces.
The Caldeira Grande and Capelinhos do offer a unique landscape, perfect for pondering on the words of writer Vitorino Nemésio about the magnificence of geological phenomena as opposed to the smallness of human existence.
