Castro Marim Castle was built on the XIII century, requested by D.Afonso III, over the Roman and Moorish fortifications that were located in an impressive and strategic location, as it was possible to spy on the Spanish border.
This castle became the first headquarters of the Order of Christ in the year 1319, the new version of the Temple, until they were transferred to the city of Tomar in 1334.
Most of the ruins preserved today date back to the seventeenth century, when the new walls were put together, requested by King D.João IV.
From the city walls you will have a wonderful view over the Forte de São Sebastião village (now closed to the public), the salt flats, the Guadiana river and the bridge that connects Portugal and Spain.
Inside the castle, next to the tower, there was the church of Santiago, built in the XIV century. This church was the first headquarters of the village and was part of the Convent of Christ of the Order of Knights. In 1504 it was transformed into military barracks.
