Sapal de Vila Real de Santo António Natural Reserve is a very appreciated placed by nature lovers, as it is an ideal place to observe native birds and plants. Moreover, this natural reserve has its own interpretation centre for visits orientation.
It is a great marshland that is flooded with the effect of Atlantic Ocean’s tides, located just a little before the mouth of the Guadiana River, in the algarvia city of Vila Real de Santo António.
This swampy area was the first one to be declared Natural Reserve in all continental Portugal and is a privileged expanse for the reproduction of fishes, crustaceans and molluscs. Besides, it is also an excellent place to observe birds, as it is easy to see storks, flamingos and stilts.
A good place to get a panoramic view of all the reserve is Castelo de Castro Marim Castle, as it offers great views from its walls.
