The Igreja de Santa Bárbara Church is located in a quiet and isolated area in the suburbs of the city of Urzelina, São Jorge Island, Azores, Portugal. This church has a simple facade, but on its inside exhibits the greatest artistic treasure of São Jorge Island, so it is convenient to visit it calmly.
On its origins, it was a modest chapel which was remodelled to host a 1845 image found by a fisherman in the bay; and was later enlarged in a work which took more than 260 years.
Currently, its interior hides the most important artistic jewel of the island, a Baroque compound of the 18th century made up of 6 tiles mosaics representing the life of the patron saint; the major golden carving reredo which extends to the sides and arches; and the paneled and painted ceiling with two episodes of Christ’s life, the pulpit and the nave paintings covered by a trough, an inverted ship hull.
Beside the church is situated the Casa de Vigía House, dating from 1647, and was a defensive bastion against pirates.
