Urzelina is one of the most privileged residential areas in São Jorge Island. Its name refers to the presence of the Urzela dyeing lichen located in the cliffs of the area.
Worship to the Holy Spirit has been reflected in the tradition of this city.
Here stands out the old town, where it is located the Old Church Tower, which body was destroyed in 1808 by a lava torrent from the last eruptions. A small garden with a 1781 fountain was added to it.
It is also worth mentioning the São Mateus Temple, with a 19th century sober facade, which atrium hosts a garden with a dragon tree.
Another of the fascinating places of the city is the house of Francisco de Lacerda, the greatest musician from Azores; and the beautiful natural pools.
In the vicinity of the port is located the Rural Expositions Centre, opening from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 13:30 to 17:00, hosted in a former store where there are exhibitions of agricultural tools, a winery and various presses.
In the outskirts of the city you will find different mills with propellers instead of blades; and a small cais; several public pools; a camping area; the lonely Igreja de Santa Bárbara de Manadas Church, which has a simple facade exhibiting on its interior a great artistic treasure, located beside the 1647 Casa de Vigía House; the Miradouro da punta dos Casteletes Viewpoint, with a fantastic panoramic view over the Pico and the Terreiros pier; and the Miradouro das Manadas Viewpoint, with views of the Pico da Esparança Peak, the highest in the island with its 1,083 metres.
