The port of Lajes do Pico is the oldest one in Pico Island, Azores, being one of the most active ones in whaling.
The history of this city has always been closely linked to whales hunting; but nowadays these cetaceans are very respected and beloved.
Currently, in the vicinity of the port has been set up the Museu dos Baleeiros (Whaler's Museum), which will help you to get into the history of whaling. From the channel are organised fascinating boat tours for the sighting of cetaceans.
The last week of August is celebrated the historical Festa dos Baleeiro Festivities, opened as a result of a vow made by whale hunters to the Lourdes Virgin in 1883. Nowadays these are the most lively ones in the island, which main attractive is the regattas of whaling canoes .
From Lajes do Pico it is also worth to stand out its old town. On it you will find the town hall, located on the former São Francisco Convent, and the Igreja de la Conceição Church, which keeps inside an alabaster statue of the title holder dating from the 16th century. surrounding these places was located the Baleias Factory, which is currently thought to be recovered to use it for other matters, and diverse warehouses related to port activities.
An interior street (São Francisco, Capitão Mor, Machado Serpa) is parallel to the sea from the city council to the Largo de São Pedro Square and the homonymous hermitage dating from 1460, going through the auditorium and the Igreja da Santíssima Trindade Church.
Eastern to the city is located the Aldeia da Forte, hosting one the most original hotel complex in the Azores. In the highest part there is a modern church and in the vicinity of the sea you will find a natural port and different viewpoints located over Ponta do Camelo.
