São Mateus is one of the oldest parishes in the Pico Island, since it is inhabited since 1482. Here are celebrated the festivities of Bom Jesús Milagroso, one of the religious festivities with the highest number of devoted in the Azores.
São Mateus is a compulsory stop for those ones who travel between Madalena and Lajes, due to its exquisite cheese and handicraft.
From the city it is worth visiting the 1842 church-sanctuary, located behind the bandstand and the Francisco Ferreira Goulart bust , an immigrant who donated the image of Jesus. This was surrounded by a new building, since the original was seriously damaged by the 1998 earthquake, which left more than 15000 homeless people.
The church has two twin towers on its sides, and three naves divided by six arches supported tones pillars in green on its interior. The major chapel worships the image of Bom Jesús Milagroso.
In this side of the island also stands out the deep conical hill located between São Mateus and São Caetano. The access to the hill is a bit difficult from this area.
On your way to Lajes do Pico, around 8 kilometres far, you will find São João, a beautiful pine forest set up as a recreation area, in which exit you can see a windmill in red at the edge of the sea.
