The Dr. José Formosinho Museu Municipal is located in the annex building to the Igreja de Santo António, in Lagos, Algarve. It houses a varied collection of archaeological items. The museum is an important showcase of history through coins, mosaics… but also contributes to our knowledge about Africa and Algarve through the ethnographic section.
The museum is characterized by a charming disorder, where roman nails found in the area are shown side to side with opium pipes from Macao and fragments from the Berlin Wall, and even old surgical instruments that will send chills down your spine!
The Igreja de Santo Antonio can be accessed only through the museum. The interior of the church is full of golden sculptures from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is also a perfect example of the baroque lavishness: everywhere you look, you will find smiley querubines and vines. Some things you should look closer at are: the faux perspective in the ceiling, the eucharistic symbols, or the gilded sculptures around the presbytery. The ceiling and walls of the presbytery are covered in blue and white tiles.
Both the dome and tile panels were added during the restoration subsequent to the 1755 earthquake.
The church has been declared National Monument.
