The São João Batista Fortress is located on the Berlenga island and it was built on the XVII century by the king D. João IV.
The main goal of this fortress was to protect the island from the attack of pirates or other countries’ armies.
This fortress was partially recovered on the XX century and adapted to tourism as a lodge. Nowadays this building is run by the Berlengas’ Friends Association and here you might spend your night listening to the sea in a medieval atmosphere.
