The Castle of Penedono, also known as Castelo do Magriço, oversees the village of Penedono from its viewpoint atop a rocky crest, almost 947 metres high.
This small yet charming castle, crowned by elegant turrets with battlements has little similitude with the grotesque idea of other Portuguese strongholds, and seems more like a village suddenly turned into a castle.
The castle was the home of the noble family Coutinho during the Portuguese dynastic crisis of 1383-1385. At that time the family favoured the desires of D. João, Mestre de Avis, of becoming King. He would be crowned so in 1385, after the defeat of the Castilian army in Aljubarrota. Despite the existence of the castle is documented since the 10th century, the current building dates back only to the 16th century.
It is advised to visit the castle at the end of the day, since the sunset forms an amazing colorful show in the walls of the castle.
