The Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz Church is located in Rossio, the heart of the town of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, capital of Graciosa Island, Azores.
It was built in the 16th century and renovated in the 18th century, when it was extended to three naves. Its facade is black and white, contrasting with the interior, which houses an impressive gilded altar carved and Baroque tile mosaics.
In the altarpiece there are a series of reredos, attributed to Cristovão Figueirido (early 16th century), with episodes of Christ’s road to Calvary, the Crucifixion, Pentecost and the Finding of the cross by St. Helena.
