Praia da Graciosa, officially known as São Mateus is a thriving town in Graciosa Island, in the middle of Azores archipelago. The town harbors the best sea port and beach in the island.
Opposite to the town stands an islet, Ilhéu da Praia Islet, with an important natural reserve and a special protection area for seabirds.
Nearby there is also a beautiful boiler within a volcanic cone; as well as the famous Furna do Enxofre, a large cavern with an underground lake.
At the heart of the city you will see some harmonic and low-height farmhouses. The best are located in the main street by the Igreja de São Mateus Church. On the shoreline you can admire an Art Decó Impêrio of 1933.
In Rochela area you will find a the Graciosa Museum, mainly dedicated to traditional fishing and whaling with boats.
Cais da Negra seaport is north of this town. It is also worth going for a stroll along Rua dos Moinhos de Vento street, where it is still possible to see wind mills.
Other interesting places in the town are a chapel from the 17th century with a Gothic Imperio, Senhora da Guia; and a chapel from the 20th century, Senhora da Saúde, that also works as an excellent lookout over Praia bay.
