Maçãs Beach, or Apples Beach is located near the population with the same name. Maçãs Beach was named this way due to the fact it’s also the mouth of the Maçãs River. According to the legen this river usually brought many apples to this beach from the surrounding farms.
Even though the neighbour population only appeared on the XIX century, remains were found on this beach proving that humans already inhabited this region since the Pre-History.
The typical electric tram from Sintra used to reach this beach.
The Maçãs Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the litoral of Sintra, although you should be careful while bathing due to the strong currents.
