The Pena Palace is one of the greatest exponents of Romanticism of the 19th century in Portugal. This colorful Palace, constructed in 1839, over the ancient ruins of the Jeronimo convent, was ordered to be built by D. Manuel I. It is located in the peak of Sintra Park, and highly visible at a great distance.
This Palace was constructed by King Fernando II, a lover of Sintra, as a holiday residence for the Royal family and who saw in this space, on top of a rocky mountain, an idyllic, magical and quite romantic place.
This palace represents a great fusion of architectural styles, from Romanticism, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance with Indian, Masonic and other inspirations. It is considered a magical work of art that crosses the Orient and Occident.
There are countless elements that can be highlighted, the most relevant is the figure of a frightening monster, half fish, half man under the portico of a trident; the tiles, the 19th century furniture (which includes personal objects of the royal family), and the stunning stained glass windows.
The park is a reflection of the Romantic aesthetic where we can find a unity between the exoticism and the impetuosity of Nature. The king ordered the construction of winding paths that wash whom visit to always find something to surprise him, as the High Cross, the Alto de Santo António, the Alto de Santa Catarina, the Cave of the monk, the source of the birds and the Valley of the Lakes. Here flora of all the world meet.
The park is open all year, it can be visited with a guide or alone, it is a very enchanting place that you will never forget.
Don't miss out on a visit to this palace of princesses and queens, queens and heroes, where everyone will find something to discover and admire.
