Alcácer do Sal Castle is an Arabesque construction dating back to the 6th century and conquered by the Portuguese crown in 1217.
Nowadays, it preserves its high walls and 31 towers, one of them housing the luxurious Pousada D. Alfonso II hotel. Within the walled area, you can also find the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo church, an incredible overlook over the beautiful landscape of the Sado river and Alentejo’s plains. You will also get to visit the Alcacer do Sal Castle Archaeological Crypt, the largest crypt of this king in Portugal.
The crypt was discovered during the conversion works undertaken in the ruins of the Virgen de Araceli en Pousada convent. The digging undercovered a complex network of structures dating back from Prehistoric times to the Modern Age. Over the urban development of the Iron Age is superimposed by Roman, Muslim, Medieval, and Modern layers. An impressive collection of ceramics and numismatic was also found here.
