Arraiolos, a small village located around 20 kilometres in the North of Évora, is famous for its wonderful carpets.
With Persian influence, they are handmade weave from the 12th century. Its draws are based on abstract motifs, tiles designs or flowers and animals representations. Carpet shops are plentiful and prices are between 50€ for a small rug and 2000€ for a beautiful and coveted piece.
Founded in the 2nd or 3rd centuries, it has a traditional structure made up by whitewashed houses with touches in blue and roofs in terracotta. The hamlet has a wonderful Medieval castle in ruins that offers excellent panoramic views.
It is also worth to visit the Igreja da Misericórdia Church. Despite its simple façade, it hides a wonderful interior with a golden altar and walls sheathed in 18th century tiles. The hundred-years-old dyeing rooms located in the main square and the Centro Interpretativo o Mundo Rural (Interpretation Centre for the Rural World) also are must visit places.
This small village has several cafes where it is possible to have a drink while you rest yourself, and a sumptuous pousada, located over the old Convent of Lóios (16th century), right on the way out of the place.
