The city of Santiago do Cacém stands atop a hill crowned with a Medieval Castle, in the region of Alentejo, Portugal.
Said castle was built by the Moors, but exchanged hands several times between Moors and Christians during the times of the Reconquista until it was finally taken by the Knights Templar and the Order de Santiago de la Espada.
Nowadays, it grants amazing views of the city. Next to the castle appears the Igreja Matriz Church (13th and 14th centuries), Gothic in style with Romanesque influences.
In the lower part of the city, next to the City Park, is the City Museum, with an interesting collection of objects collected from the castle and Miróbiga Roman Site, north of the city.
The Torre da Água Tower supplants the image of old water storages, and has an aesthetics inspired in a skyscraper. From the restaurant in the rooftop, you can get amazing views at the city of Santiago do Cacém and the ocean.
In the surrounding areas there are several places worth a visit. The most important ones are the Miróbiga Roman Site, the Reserva Natural das Lagoa de Santo André e da Sancha (Natural Reserve of the Lagoons of Santo André and Sancha), and Badoca Safari Park.
