Vila Viçosa is one of the highly recommended marble cities to visit in the Alentejo region.
This city counts with the Praça da República Square, a beautiful square lengthen with orange trees, a magnificent marble palace which turns out to be among the biggest ones in Portugal, the Museu do Mármore Museum (Ducal Palace), attractive churches and a castle which hosts the Archaeology Museum and the Museu de Caça (Hunting Museum).
It is important to mention that during the second weekend of September this city hosts the Festa dos Capuchos, liven up by a bullfight and a herd of cows (a bull is let loose and the inhabitants try to jump over him).
In this modest city used to live the Bragança dynasty, whose kings ruled Portugal until it became a Republic.
