Almourol Castle, supplied with 10 towers, surprisingly stands over a little island located in the middle of the Tajo River, 5 kilometres far from the village of Constância and from Vila Nova da Barquinha, in the Santarém district.
This castle, considered one of the most emblematic military monuments of the Reconquest, was erected in 1171 by the order of Gualdim Pais, the great master of the Order of the Knights Templar, over the old site of a Roman fort.
From a little pier located on the shore of the river, boats depart regularly which will allow you to visit the island where the castle is set up for around 2€. Onde in the island, a little walk will get you to the walls of the castle.
