The Igreja de Santa Maria da Graça Church, with a Flamboyant-Gothic style, was built up in Santarém in 1380 under the order of D. Afonso Telo de Menezes, first Ourem Count. Its beautiful facade has a rosette window sculpted in a single block of stone .
This church, located to the south of the Igreja de Marvila Church, was excellently restored through a series of works which returned the purity to the lines of its principal nave.
In the interior, where the atmosphere is overwhelming, you will find various tombs, among them the one of Don Pedro de Meneses (15th century), first Governor of Ceuta, located in the right side of the cruise. The sepulchre, where the recumbent statues of Viana Dukes (15th century), rests over eight lions, is ornamented with acanthus leaves and shields.
Here also lies the funerary tombstone of Pedro Álvares Cabral, Brazil’s discoverer in 1500, whose statue is in the front of the church.
Also worth noting are the 18th century tile-panel which represents St John the Baptist between Saint Rita and Saint Francis, located in the right side nave of the chapel.
