The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church, also known as the Igreja do Sminário Church, features a Baroque facade from the late 18th century. This church, nowadays used as cathedral, was a former Jesuit school. Its architecture is characterized by the superposition of various floors underlined by cornices, windows, and alcoves which give an aspect looks more of a palace than a religious temple, influence of having been built over a former royal palace.
The alcoves are ornamented with statues of the saint of the Society of jesus, with its symbol (Christ’s monogram), crowning the main door.
Is inside is sober despite the marble inlays which decorate the columns and the altar. The paintings of the roof that represent the Immaculate stands out, as well as those of the Jesuit’s activities in the evangelized continents; and its golden altar.
