The Antigos Paços do Concelho da Pederneira (old city council of Nazaré , is located on Praça Bastião Fernandes square, next to the city’s Mother Church, in Pederneira, Nazaré.
Adorned with elements from the 17th century, its facade is large and straight. At that time was as well built the main door, above which it is still possible to see the reigns’ shield and the bell tower’s dome.
Its upper floors were working as city council, the court and other municipal services, whereas the lower floor was used as prison and butcher´s.
The Pelourinho (Pillory) is located next to the old city council. It is the symbol of justice of the old city council of Pederneira. It is a silex monolithic, located above an octagonal basis.
This monument was placed in here in 1886, substituting the missing manueline-in-style pillory. This monolithic silex corresponds to a fragment of a fossilized tree trunk. Commonly known as Pederneira, it has around 150 million years, being one of the most antiques natural monuments of Portugal. It is Public Interest Monument since 1933 due to its cultural and historical value.
