São Brás Hill is a remarkable magmatic mound, raising in the heart of a dunes covered-by-pines-woods landscape. It is considered as a floral island.
Visualised from 35 kilometres far and covered by a green and black flora, this hill is a sign for sailors. São Brás Hill is of great historic and natural interest. Archaeological remains have been found in the island, proving the pre-romanic occupation of the place.
Its peak, 156 height from the ground, can be reached by a stairway. Once on the top, you will have charming views. Here is the lookout sentry and a small chapel. Every 3rd February, in this little shrine, the secular and religious festivity of São Brás is celebrated, meaning the beginning of the Carnival.
The flora of the hill is fascinating. In 1932, its 32 hectares were classified by its vast and varied vegetation, since it hosts nearly 150 types of vascular plants, within which 15 have iberic origins; a large number of lichen and some bryophytes (moss plants). Among the most common vegetal species stand out the carrasco, the strawberry tree and the Italian buckthorn.
Regarding the avifauna, the black-winged kite and the rounded wing eagle can be seen in the hill.
