Located over a rocky spike, you will find São Miguel Arcanjo Fort on your way to Praia do Norte Beach, in the picturesque village of Nazaré, Portugal.
This fort was built in order to protect the beach from Argelian, Moroccan, and Norman pirates. Its latest remodelling was commanded by King João IV in the mid-17th century. This event’s date is engraved above its entrance door.
The current walls of this prominent military monument were built over the walls of an earlier fort by D. Sebastião in 1577. The changes introduced by João IV correspond to the raising of the strength in fishing in Nazaré.
During the first French invasion (1807-1808), the fort was occupied by Napoleon I’s soldiers. However, the people from Sítio and Pederneira threw them out, becoming a symbol of popular resistance.
In here there is a lighthouse built in 1903 covering 15 miles.
The Barbaçã do Forte de São Miguel viewpoint is located right next to the fort, from where you can have amazing panoramic views. It is surrounded by Salgado Beach in the East and Nazaré in the West.
