Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré (Nossa Senhora da Nazaré Sanctuary) is located in the main square of this fishing village. Every september take place in here the festivities to honour the patron saint.
Its baroque in style facade dates back to the end of the 17th century. It has a gallery-shaped anteroom and a baroque porch opening at the top of a semicircular staircase. The watch face is guarded by two twin towers.
Its inside has a single nave and a golden-carving main altar with Solomonic columns. Adorned with biblical tiles in white and blue, dates back to the 18th century. They were made by the Dutch artist W. Van Kloet. As well, you will find there a painting of the apparition of Nossa Senhora to Fuas Roupinho.
King Fernando I ordered this temple to be built in 1377 in order to keep the virgin’s sacred image, due to the rising of pilgrims to the Capela da Memoria Chapel.
