Belmonte Castle is located atop a promontory in the eastern side of Serra da Estrela.
The fortified defenses were built by order of King D. Sancho I, and King D. Dinis ordered the Castle to be built, which was then reformed by King D. Manuel I.
It’s worth noting the Homage Tower, the Manueline windows in the exterior of the Palace, and the walled area. The castle features the coat of arms of the Cabral family, in memoriam of a noble family.
