The nucleus of Trancoso is developed around three connected squares, one of them dominated by a manuline monument, the Igreja da Misericórdia Church (Baroque), and the Igreja de São Pedro Church (1728), where the poet and prophet known as O Bandarra is buried. He was the one propagating the myth of the returning of S. Sebastião during the Spanish dominion of the area. The other square is home to the Temple of Nossa Senhora da Fresta (16th-17th centuries) and the Palace of the Viscounts of Trancoso.

Here you will find the Capela de São Bartolomeu Chapel, where the marriage between King D. Dinis and Queen Dª Isabel of Aragon was officiated in 1282. On top of the town appears the Castle, with a Homage Tower and five other towers with walls and turrets. In the surrounding area of Trancoso, it’s worth visiting Sernancelhe, located 25 kilometres out of the town towards Lamego. The hamlet still preserves it Romanesque church from the 12th century and it’s attractive façade.

Once you cross Sernancelhe it’s much more simple to climb up to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Lapa, located at 1000 meters high.

25 kilometres to the north of Trancoso, you can get to Penedono, a hamlet with a small and charming castle of triangular floor.

Another interesting trip could be to Marialva (23 kilometres into the N. 102), an abandoned medieval village that still preserves its stoned roads, castle, walls, and Igreja de Santiago Church. The route you can prologue for 9 more kilometres to the north to visit the Castle of the Knights Templar of Longroiva, rebuilt in 1176 by Gualdim de Pais.
