The imposing Castle of Guarda was built in 1199 by King D. Sancho I. The only remaining parts are fragments of the walls known as Torre dos Ferreiros Tower, in Gothic style, and the Torre de Menagem (Homage Tower) where the Heritage Museum of Guarda is located.
The Torre de Menagem, located atop a hill, on top of the Cathedral of Guarda, is open to the public and can be visited daily. It offers unique views that even reach Spain and Serra da Estrela.
The Heritage Museum of Guarda (Museu do Património da Guarda) is located further downhill. The museum exhibits a collection of archeological findings recovered in the area. The visit includes a 3D movie with panoramic views of the area and its monuments.
