Cacela Velha is the oldest part of the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António. Its existence as an urban centre dates back at least, regarding the archaeological vestiges found, to Roman and Arab times, although it is believed it has Phoenician origins.
Nowadays it is a modest farming and fishing village with a typical hamlet of white houses grouped around the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção Church (16th-17th centuries), that is a wonderful viewpoint over the ocean and the sandy areas of the Reserva Natural da Ría Formosa Nature Reserve.
In this locality, apart of the above mentioned church, it is worth to visit its Núcleo Museológico (Museum Complex) and Fortress.
