The Ponte Dom Luís I Bridge was built in 1886 by a prestigious disciple of Gustave Eiffel, and it’s located over the Douro river, in Porto & Vila Nova de Gaia.
The highest part of the bridge is open to public as well as to the metro line. From this platform you’ll be able to observe one of the most beautiful views over the river and the city. The lowest platform is open to cars only.
The construction of this bridge represents a historic moment, since before it was built people used to cross the river over a bridge made by old boats also used to transport groceries. When Napoleon Bonaparte reached Porto in 1809, a multitude of people tried to cross the bridge at the same time, leading to its destruction and the death of many.
