Vila Nova de Gaia is well-known for its worldwide unique and appreciated wines, the Vinho de Porto; made of grapes that the “ravelos” (gorgeous traditional river boats) transported from vineyards located up the river.
From Porto you can cross the Douro river through the Ponte Luis I Bridge in a short walk and visit some of the wineries in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Most wineries include a small visit and tasting sample of their wines, as well as the chance to buy exquisite wines. Tickets are normally inexpensive, and sometimes given away when doing other activities, such as boat tours.
