Santa Clara Convent was established in the high area of the city of Elvas in 1525 thanks to D. Margarida Pereira and D. Joana de Brito, benefactors.
The church suffered important changes throughout history, worth noting the changes to the major chapel in 1690, and the reconstructions after the bombings of the Spanish army in 1706 and 1711. In ruins, the convent was abandoned in the 19th century.
In 1953, it was ceded to “Direcção-Geral da Fazenda Pública à Associação das Irmãs Concepcionistas da Beata Beatriz da Silva” and almost totally rebuilt, with a new simpler façade.
The current interior of the church features a very rich reredos in gilded sculpture and a painting representing the “Adoration of Our Lady of San Francisco and Santa Clara.”
