Santa Maria de Cós Monastery is located in the village of Cós, in the municipal district of Alcoçaba, and is one of the biggest Cistercian nunneries in Portugal.
The construction of the convent that can be seen today started in 1558, although it wasn't finished until 1670.
The church has been recently restored and shows a Baroque style in its full glory.
The interior of the church is divided by a big grille (to separate cloistered nuns from public) in golden carving, fully decorated with 17th century tiles. Its high altar stands up coated with a golden carving that dates from the beginnings of the Baroque sculpture in Portugal (17th century), and exhibits a sculpture of the Holy Family.
A Manueline door is located on the back wall of the choir, composed by two armillary spheres, royal arms and a cross of Christ.
The sacristy is coated with 10 panels of blue and white tiles that show scenes of Bernardo de Claraval’s life.
The decoration of the ceilings of the church and sacristy is an unique case among the Cistercian abbeys of Portugal and Spain. The decoration of the five rows of the cupola are integrated in a movement of religious paintings of the 18th century.
Outside, you will find the statues of S. Bento and S. Bernardo.
The monastery was declared Building of Public Interest in 1946.
