The Museu Nacional do Vinho (Museum of the Wine) of Alcobaça is an authentic gem of the winegrowing national patrimony. This museum is housed in a formerly wine cellar of 1874. It was built by the well known José Eduardo Raposo de Magalhães to develop the production of wine JEM, being then one of the most modern cellars of the time.
The building is by itself an architectonic patrimony of great importance in the context of the industry of wine of Portugal.
The legacy of the museum reflects today the memory of the modernization that took place in 1948, when the quinta do Olival was acquired. Closed by the National Council of the Wine (Junta Nacional do Vinho, JNV), the heirs of José Eduardo Raposo de Magalhães started an action to collect the material used for the production of the wine in their different delegations in 1968. As a result, they compiled a series of collections with great historical and patrimonial value.
Today, the collection of the museum counts with more than 8,500 pieces of furniture related to the oenology. It is by itself an interesting collection about ethnology, traditional technology, industrial archaeology and decorative graphic arts. It is as well the biggest collection in the country regarding the topic of the wine.
